Pre 60 no MOT.

I have a 59 built 99 that is registered as 1960 , I understand that the legislation intended that the build date was the deciding factor. However the DVLA don't see it that way. Has anyone had success in an appeal? ,or is it a waste of time?. Can we get a copy of the factory record?.

DVLA seem to just look at the date of original registration. Best of luck trying to convince them to use the build date - if that can be confirmed.

I think you will need to prove the date of manufacture, my brother had a type 3 VW when the non payment of VEL was introduce, it had been registered in the U.K in 1973 so invited paid VEL, he contacted VW Germany, fot a certified date of manufacture, it stated 1972 so with this infor he had the proof for DVLA, or what it was called at the time, and received his VEL payments back, I'm sure the same will apply with MOT requirements. kind regards

Dear Mr Tuck,

I have a 1960 ES2 that was registered on 8 Jan 1960. DVLA wanted an MoT but I phoned them and stated that it would have been impossible for Norton to have made the motorcycle and get it to a showroom in eight days back then. The DVLA man on the end of the phone said "Yes you are right, it would have been a world record - I'll wipe it off the computer now".

Subsequently I contacted NOC's Chris Streather and he told me it was manufactured in November 1959.

NOC's records are unimpeachable when it comes to dating with the DVLA so I would to them. I guess I just got lucky in speaking to a human DVLA bureaucrat!

Dear Mr Tuck,

My last but one sentence should have read "I would contact NOC's Chris Streather to get a manufacturing date". Apologies.

Hi Anthony, I have a letter from the club with the manufacture date in 1959 but my understanding was that the DVLA would not accept this and needed factory record from the makers, bit late for that!!.
