Paper oil filter kit compatibility

Forums

Hello all,

I'm going to fit the Norvil Paper oil filter kit 064283 to my 1963 650SS and wanted confirmation that there are no issues using this kit witha 3 start worm gear withrocker oil feed from the oil tank return line.Specifically, that the extra restriction of the paper filter doesn't result inincrease flow to the head? Might be over thinking this..

Also, is it preferable to change pump drive to a 6 start worm and gear and supply rocker from the pressure side (timing cover port) or is the 3 start adequate for an early 650SS?

Thanks

Matt

3 start is good, 6 start will need a complete engine strip to drill rods ,new rocker spindles and better piston rings ,might also need valve seals and crankcase oilways enlarged. The engine breather may not cope and leaks may appear from many places, the mag will probably oil up.There will be a power loss and the pump will wear out fast. Then once you realise its not a good idea you can just do the whole thing again in reverse.Yeah,go for it!!.

If you rearrange the piping so the filter is before the takeoff to the rockers the extra restriction of the filter will be before the takeoff and so have no effect of the amount of oil diverted as this will be set by the normal restriction in the oil tank return. This is the way I added the Norton filter to 2 BSA's that have the rocker feed teed off the main return.

Agree with John above and that's how I did mine, the oil return from the side of the timing case is taken to the oil filter inlet first and then from the oil filter outlet back to the tank.

I also made my own bracket to fit the filter behind the gearbox, the ones that are purpose made for sale mount the oil filter horizontally - which I didn't like - so the one I made has the filter mounted vertically and this means that when changing the filter, the oil doesn't pour out everywhere. With the horizontal ones, as soon as you unscrew it, black, wet mess everywhere!

Think I'll stick with the 3 start gear... seems Norton designed each engines lubrication set up to match the specified pump, hosing etc. and that deviation is not straight forward!

Thanks also for the tip on the rocker feed, makes sense to plumb it oil tank side of the filter so flow is still split as originally intended.

Many Thanks for the advice

Hello, I was going to fit one myself then had a think about it and my discussion is to forget it, air-cooled motorcycle engine run hotter than your car engine does so these paper filers will not last long, and you still have to change your oil every 2k anyway, Royal Enfieldhad the right idea they have small oil filter inside the timing cover you can change these really easy, to upgrade to six start you need a complete engine rebuild with new shell bearing with holes and main bearings new plan rocker spindles and larger return hole at the back of the cylinderhead and barrels and crankcase in to timing side, and oil pressure release valve spring need changing, very early 650s like my Manxman used a banjo breath from the inlet rocker cover they had a longer center stud I do have all the part numbers for this set up , now have fun yours anna j
