Hi. Can anyone advise me on the best colour match for the silver tank on my 1959 model 50?

So many shades of silver as with any colour..I find it best to take a panel bearing the colour you want to a local auto paint supplier. They will scan the colour and mix what you need.

Unfortunately this would be my normal method but in this instance the tank appears to have been hand painted. No original paint is showing. The best I could do is try matching the paint to photos. Im just interested to know what coulors other people may have used.

This web site has paint suggestions (e.g. Silver Fox) elsewhere. But Ford Silver Fox has long gone from the high street (i.e. Halfords etc) and I'm sure there must be modern equivalents. Does anybody know of a modern version?

My Honda car looks remarkably similar -that's getting on in yearsnow, but last time I looked I found rattle cans. But most cars nowadays are either silver or black so there must be a good modern colour match somewhere.

Now we'll no doubt move on to fuel-proofing - but that's another issue.

Thanks, John - I recently 'dinged' my tank (****!) so I need to patch repair it locally. I must experiment - and maybe post the results since this question has come up again and again.

The silver tank on my 57 Model 50 was left for my painter to decide the shade. He did his research and came up with his last shade of silver before grey. I have to say it looks perfect and will post a picture when this project is completed. The lack of parts available has meant this project has taken more than 10 years. Never again while the spares situation remains this bad and thanks to all those who helped.

I'll be painting my ES2 tank some time next year. I've found Tetrosyl silver wheel paint excellent in the past and it seems more petrol resistant than other aerosols.

I used it on this Honda tail fairing.

Ian - judging by the Tetrosyl safety data sheets, the stuff ought to be pretty good! Although I wonder what the similar sheets say about Halford's high street aerosol paints...I suspect they are all just about as hazardous as each other. As far as I can see, they are best avoided if you happen to be pregnant...

I'm going to get my sub-aqua kit refurbished before I try any more painting.

Not just petrol proof, you need to be ethanol proof these days too, if you are using the solvent inside your tank !

Needle stuck.

In the words of George Cohen:

Norton silver can be replicated by using: 1974 VW Beetle silver, or Vauxhall star silver mist, or Vauxhall silver starfire metallic,or

for a "greeny" patina, then use Vauxhall Platinum starfire metallic. Rover siver leaf, MME421 is also a good match.
