Blocking off the chain oiler is a common mod, I do it as its hard to get the correct flow and spray cans are easier.

On 3 oil tanks, 72 original, 74 original a spare bought in the 80's the oil return pipe is crimped on the end and this is welded to the inside of the oil cap tower, there are 2 holes drilled (3mm or so in size) in the side of the tube about 1/2" down from the crimp. Is yours still welded to the inside of the oil cap tower or free, it could have broken loose and you see a fix by a previous owner or an earlier version. A pic would help.

yes i understand the chain oiler ,but was worried about the restriction that the crimp may have had,but after reading your info(thx)i can blow with a piece if rubber hose and with a finger jammed down the cap tower feel the air and restrict it with my finger so i assume that would be the hole you say is there ,the pipe is brazed along the inside of the oil filler tower thank you thought i had a problem would send pic but not sure how on this site rgds steve cEmbarassed
