Just moving towards the latter stages of my 1959 Dommie 99 rebuild. Looking at the handlebar levers they are stamped with an R in a triangle ( see pic). At first I thought ok left and right but both are stamped R and if fact both seem to be left handed levers (with me so far?)

These are ball ended and came with the bike and I'd like to know whether they are original fittings or not. If so I'll get 'em rechromed.

Any thought pl?

thanks

Barry

Std Dommys with an AMC box were fitted with plain blades (no ball ends) . The clutch was 7/8th centers pivot-nipple and the brake was similar but with slightly larger centers 11/8 (why I have no idea) .Choke lever mounted on brake with extended nut mounting fixing on one side.(Not seen much these days as many replaced with pattern stuff).

Thanks Robert, any suggestion on where I can source decent quality replacements reasonably similar to the original?

Hello these are Amal brake levers I have the sales manual from 1956 on to 1972 there are 9 pages full of differenttypes of brake leavers ball end leave were not fitted to 1959 models but you can get 7/8th to 1.inch pivot let me know which type you need I can give you the amal part numbers yours anna j

If the New levers are both 7/8th pivot/nipple centers that will be ok ,it will just make the brake a bit better, Most of the lever sets on the market have the wrong leverage ratio for the AMC box so buy with caution. Cheap sets have ugly pivot bolts and wear out fast.

Hi

does the 7/8th center make the clutch action considerably lighter? I have alloy levers on all my bikes which seem to have 1"1/8th centers and a stiff action. Will happily replace all if it saves my hand. Thanks Paul.

YES. The AMC box needs the proper levers. If you are a bit handy you may be able to redrill the pivots ,I have done this on some italian levers for a small Ducati.

Thank you Anna and Robert.

So my ball end levers are of the period but not fitted to a 1959 Dommie; interestingly, and this checks out with what has been said, my levers are 1"1/8 pivot so are definitely wrong. I've also just checked my 1963 CSR 650 which has the same box and they are 7/8" pivot.

Anna if you have the part numbers for Amal blades with 7/8" pivots that would be very helpful. However being realistic I'm not going to get original parts and will have to get a quality pattern set. Unless anyone has any direct experience of the pattern levers currently on the market they would care to share, I guess the quality measure will be price, as it normally is.

Thanks

Barry
