Norton numbering

There have been many questions on this forum about Norton numbering. In an idle moment I put 'Norton motorcycle model numbers' into a search engine, and got a surprisingly comprehensive result;

http://www.bmh.com.au/norton/index.php?id=modelnum

One thing puzzled me -there is a difference between the 'Number' column and the 'NOC Number', which is consistently lower. I am not sure if these numbers are first number of the year or what. My bike is some 200 higher than the 'NOC Number' for my year, which I suspect is the first number of the production year.

Hello well I would reallyquestionthe year 1960 to 1961 has My Norton Manxman 650 is date stamped M/12/60 and is numbered 18-95069, and was built at the beginning of December1960 the firstever 650 Manxman was builton the 7th of November1960 and its number is 18-93601 shop -7 the second Manxmanbuilt on the same day with 30 others is 18-93602 and has the shop number -1 the shop numbers do not run in cronilogical order has machines were pulled off or back on the production line and engine and frame numbers do not run in any cronilodical order too from one model to another so if you want to know the year your machnie was built then you have only look on the top lug next to the head stock this is used for the engine steady to bolt on to the frame you will have to remove your tank and remove some paint too, has these numbers are very small stamp marks and on the top edge of the lug, And magnetos are date stamped to like my one has the same date as the machnie so good luck with it all yours anna j

It looks to me as if the NOC number is the first one of that model year. My 99, year letter R, registered in December 1959, has a number lower than the listed one but higher than the NOC one. So where did the listed numbers come from?
