This is easy...
This is easy, from the 1950s headlight bulbs would have two filaments-Main Beam and dipped beam. These two wires are fed from the dip switch, rewired bikes and newer bikes would have the dip switch near the left hand thumb (handlebar) The dip switch is fed with the blue wire (if the bike is correctly wired) from the light switch. EASY.

I discovered to my cost that the switch in my headlight is secured in the shell with a spring circlip, - that kept coming loose which then shorts the power to earth and blows the fuse. As my bike is a "regular user" I fitted a combined light horn and dipswitch as fitted to Yamaha XT500 etc it also gives indicator switches should you wish to fit them. the original headlight switch is now purely decorative! The Japanese colours took a bit working out but with the addition of a few crimped bullet connectors the job was easy. The switch is also made of aluminium so the paint could be stripped off and polished if wanted.

Stephen,
Ive attached a wiring diagram for a 1955 ES2, which should help you trace the wiring in your headlight, so long as the original colours have been used. It looks like the earth wire is from household wiring i.e. green and yellow.
The wiring diagrams for 1956 to 1958 is different, also the 1959 to 1962 as it used alternator and coil ignition.
