mysterious rear wheel and sprocket

Forums

I need a new 42 tooth brake drum / sprocket as the teeth on mine are worn and I dont want to really put my new chain and gearbox spkt with it.

I cant find one anywhere, only 43 tooth ones. These may fit, but am unsure as to the hub I have. It is wider than the front, where the through bolts are outside the cotton reel? hub. Whereas this rear measures 3 1/2" wide, and the through (waisted) bolts pass though it.

In a nutshell I don't know what hub I have, and as such what drum I should be looking for.

If anyone can help it would be appreciated - even info on anyone who could re tooth the drum.

Thanks, Martin

I'm on rather thin ice here, but I think this hub might be from around 1932.

What you should be looking for depend heavily on what bike it is for...

It seems that all repro brake drums now sports 43 teeth, but even so work perfectly !

These hubs were used up until 1935 or so. Page below is from the 'subsequent to 1933' Spare Parts List. They were used together with the large bearing dust covers (which were discontinued as they trapped water).

The pattern sprockets now available all seem to be 43t. (As per WD16H) I suspect this is due to the fact that for years, there were huge quantities of ex-WD spares available and probably no new Civilian 42t made after Norton production was moved to Woolwich at the latest. Somewhere along the line, the pattern manufacturers have taken WD16H drums to copy.

The drum / sprocket part number 9518 remained unchanged from 1934 to 1939 at least (and probably post-war too but the part numbers changed). The 43t drum will fit but of course chain length may have to be taken into account.

There have been some horror stories about rear sprocket quality. Best not to buy from an unknown source off eBay

Thanks Arne and Richard

It seems you are both of the same mind, and the rather useful parts list backs it up. Looks like I'll have to go the 43 tooth route - a small price to pay. Would you say the clubs or RGM's sprocket would be of a good quality, and that I'm looking at the right ones? I.E E2/463 and D13-468 respectively

Martin.
