Model 77 air filter

Forums

Hi all,

I would like to fit an air filter on my '57 Model 77. There is hardly any space for one, as the frame is in the way. Considering an Amal screen

Air Intake 376 & 600 Series

I am running the stock Amal Monoblock. Is anyone aware of another option?

Thanks in advance,

Skip... very seldom see them in UK on singles or indeed on any British bikes pre Commando anyway. Manufacturers didn't usually fit them as standard and they were happy to stand back and allow customers to allow their engines to wear away early. You've probably seen the huge Vokes air filter on military Nortons. But they were only used in dusty climates. Maybe some else has ideas? I'd like something (discrete) on my 16H because it upsets my engineering sensibilities not to have one. The trials riders use elaborate home made foam things don't they?David.

The M77 is technically not an air filter. It is used as a precautionary measure to help stop flashback from the carb. Nothing else. They do however work at this and will minimise the chances of your bike turning into a barbecue. Always a good reason in my opinion!

I use the lager type on both my ES2's with three layers of fine mesh. Still not a brilliant filter, but better than nothing!

I tried that style of filter/flame arrestor on my 19S. It is surprising how much restriction to air flow that small amount of mesh creates. Performance with the mesh was significantly down, and probably explains why the ES2 type with a larger surface area that Boo mentioned was adopted. Maybe the performance could have been restored with jet changes but it was easier just to remove the mesh (although I do worry about possible unintended barbecues).

Thanks all! I'll have a look for the larger type Boo recomended. Any thoughts on a source?

My M77 (1957 600cc Model 77) doesent show a filter on the original leterature , but it just kills me to have all thae dirt & grit sucked into the engine. Hadn't thought about the flame arrestor thought, sounds like a good idea.

Also, just to clear things up, the M77 is my bike, the "screen" part number from Amal is "376 SHORT"

Thanks again for the good advice !

Hi Skip,

Vokes made one for the Model 7 but it was only for 1955.

They are impossible to find; they could not be taken apart to be cleanedand when their life was up they were thrown away!

Hi Anna,

what filter do you see 3 of on ebay? The Original ES2 large flare arrestor screens, or the 1955 Model 7 Vokes filters?

Large parts of the UK don't really suffer from dust, hence no desperate need for air cleaners. We have the problem of water ingestion instead. Or snow at the moment...

I'd question that (good naturedly, of course) Gordon. Do any amount of driving in this country and see how filthy your car gets... And we use dust covers in the garage, no?

I personally think it's folly not to use a filter, but each to their own, of course....

www.hitchcockmotorcycles.com/amal-carburettors-airfilters-bellmouths is worth a look. They offer a range of long/ short bellmouths with and without flame traps+pancake filters all at reasonable prices.

Thanks Charles. Hitchcocks do show one at 29.75 GBP, I assume thats with VAT? 31.49 GBP from Amal directly (includes VAT). Here is the bigger air intake, part number 30/339 will have to check thread size though, as it shows for pre-monoblock, but I have a Monoblock carb.
