My tank has a petrol leak just where the petrol tap joins . What solder was used on these old tanks and what is the best way to fix this issue without blowing myself up,don't want to fill it with sealer.
also the tank has 56 stamped on the underside what does this mean ?

I can see from your picture that it's a pie crust tank, you should be able to get it re-soldered or braised. But if you don't want to mess up the paint and you don't want to pour sealer into the tank, you can use a good 2 pack instant metal on the outside of the tank. I have done this a few times now, it can be pushed into small holes or leaking seems and smoothed over with a wet finger so it is hardly noticeable, then paint it. I've just done this in 3 places on my ES2 tank and it's fine now.

Hi Dave thanks for the reply.
just washed the tank out and bought some lead solder ,going to fill tank up with water turn upside down and put some heat on and strike some solder along the very fine weap.
That should sort it.
can you let me know the brand name of the product you use for future reference
cheers Ian

It would be useful to be more specific about the tank (if soldered, it will have the so called 'pie crust' along the lower sides, and be pre-WW2) and where the leak is exactly.

Hi Paul thanks for the reply
I thought that when I said the tank was leaking around whare the petrol tap joins the tank that would have been enough !
Didnt think a description , age ,ect was relavent as there is a attachment with a photograph.
Ill prosume you didn't look

Hi Ian, I'm sorry I don't have a makers name for the resin/instant metal I use as my mate got it for me from work. Is you tank leaking from the seam or is it just leaking from the seal between the petrol tap and tank? I find using some PTFE tape around the thread will seal a lot better than just a fibre washer.

Hi Dave ,it's the seam unfortunately going to solder today at some point . Yes PTFE is great I use it on loads of threads but wasn't sure if it was ok with petrol ?
cheers Ian
