Loose inlet valve guide - Loctite?

Forums

I've just finished lapping my head and barrel together to avoid the need for a head gasket. I took the valves out so I could make sure the oil ways were clear and clean ( God bless pipe cleaners! ) sadly the bronze inlet guide is loose, I'd rather have an oversize guide fitted but want to get the bike running asap and was wondering ifanyone had success with loctite - prob 642 - the guide is held in place by a boss and the valve spring cup so isn't going anywhere!

I would not use anything other than an oversize guide (about .0015 interference) unless the enemy tanks are just over the hill and warming their engines. Then I would consider it. The longer it is loose in the head, the more difficult is the proper repair.

You are absolutely right, but if the loctite works, of course it's not loose! I've used it to hold main bearings that have spun out on my race bike and it has held well. But I must admit I am coming around to taking it to my local engineers, are oversize guides available or do they have to be made?

Remember that the head will see a lot more heat than the cases and may well cause the loctite to give up.

Just found one for sale - cheaper than a pot of loctite! ........ Answers the question really! I'll get on with de rusting the oil tank with phosphoric acid tomorrow.
