Lightweight rear brake

Forums

Following on from the rear brake discussion in the "Electra in spring  time" thread, is it possible to fit the Electra (Dominator) rear hub/brake to the Navigator?   I don't know, I had a Dominator hub that I considered fitting but didn't bother.  Its a big, heavy thing.  The 7" brake should perform much better than the FB brake, that is to say, it would contribute something to braking unlike the FB brake!   At the expense of extra weight.

My view on this is that there are better suited brakes if one is not overly bothered by originality.

The two I considered were a BSA C15 brake and hub and the Royal Enfield Bullet rear hub and brake, ultimately going with the RE.

The advantage of the RE wheel is that it is slightly lighter.  It is QD.  A slightly larger spindle, 17mm diameter, stiffens up the swinging arm nicely.  A brake that works quite well.  By careful (radial) positioning of the brake plate a straight line between foot pedal and brake lever, rather than a bent rod to clear the rear suspension unit and pillion foot rest. The is important for good feel.  Another big and very noticeable advantage is RE's drive line shock absorber, its in the rear hub  Also, the parts are cheap and very readily available.

The only modification to the Norton parts was to widen the slots in the s/arm.   I modified the RE QD arrangements quite a bit, located the bearing properly, fitted a suitable size sprocket, modified brake plate anchor to fit swinging arm and, of course, laced it in to an 18" rim.

A couple of photos attached.
