Sorry guys more help please - the other leak, (besides the oil bath!!) is from where the kickstart enters the gearbox. Are there seals and 'O' rings as it is not obvious from the various manuals. Thanks

Getting confused about selling bikes...I thought yours was earlier...If yours is 1956 then it must either have one of the last with the 'laid down' box or the earliest with the 'AMC' box but they are much the same - so I'd go for a quadring and if that leaks then go for a lip seal. But the lip seal needs a small amount of machining but the quadring goes straight in.

Sorry - my notes don't say. I think I bought 2 at the same time and there should be a spare in my Norton box in the shed. If nobody else can help I'll try and get it tomorrow in daylight. The shaft is easy to measure (it's Imperial - 1" or 7/8" I think - some round number) and I think the quadring is 3/16".I think I gave up trying to find one from a general supplier and bought them from RJM (might have been Norvil).

Stuart - I just measured the spare quad ring. It is 1" internal diameter x 1/8" section.I also put one instead of the gear change outer O-ring.

Hi,here is a cure if you have the laydown box: You need one 28mmx2mm O ring, one 28mmx2,5mm and two 20mmx1mm.Take out the outer cover, kickstart shaft and put one of the 28mm rings against the shoulder of the shaft.Check the end float so use the best of them.Fit the two 20mm ringsat the two machined rails at the axle.Grease it and put together and I think it is leakfree. Good luck!

The seal is described in the parts manual as a compressed cork washer! Are they available?

Apart from the cork washer mentioned, if you deepen one of the twogrooves on the kick starter shaftto 1.002" Dia., a number #022 'O ' ring can beslipped onto stop any oil seeping out from between the shaft and bush!

There is supposed to be an o-ring between the steel bush that supports the force on the kick start and the case. It's not a good application for a o-ring - a lip seal is sometimes used to replace it.Mine now has a 'quadring' instead - no machining needed and has lasted without leaks for some years now.Maybe someone else knows how the o-ring is supposed to fit. I bought a new one once and although it fitted the shaft it was loose inside the recess that contains both the o-ring and the steel bush.
