Historic class

So now that my Commando is eligible for free road tax and MOT, what do I need to do to get it all sorted out?

Fill out the appropriate section on your V5C form for change of registration classto Historicand mail it back to DVLA. They will check details on your bike for 40 year rolling date to qualify and if OKwillsend you back a new V5C , and with a refund cheque for any unused months of road tax if applicable.

The no MOT rolling 40 year rule hasn't come into force yet but is supposed to in May. Presumably this will happen automatically when DVLA send out their annual road tax due reminder - which shows zero amount to pay for Historic classbut you still need to go round to the post office with the reminder to get it processed into the DVLA systemas usual.

Mine was done automatically by Swansea last year with no prior intervention on my part. First the new V5C arrived then the refund. I was surprised!! Mine was first registered May 1, 1977 as a 'built from parts' bike.

Hi

Well mine is a 1977 and first taxed on the 1st of march 77` and last year I tried to get mine done on the 1st of April last year and they would not have it and said to try next year, well this is now that year so am going to try to do the V5c on Tuesday the 3rdwhich means my Norton Commando is now already 41 years old so hope that it will be ok now, also it run`s out of MOT on the 26th of April and the New 40 year MOT rule don`t come in until about the 20th of May so How do you think that will work for me will I have to take it off the road from the 26th till the 20th of may.... remember mine is already now 41 years old I don`t know what to do about that one.

Cheers Mo

Hi Maurice

I appreciate itâs only for a month - but in order to ride the bike legally you could always get the bike tested one last time?

Hi All

Just an update I have just got back from the post office and can now confirm that I have now done my Commando to an Historic Vehicle and it did not hurt a bit just handed over my V5 and it was done even the road Tax is all automatic from the 1st of April ....at the same time I done my little KH400-A3 and it was done the same... only thing they could not tell me is how wilI I get on with the MOT as said before that run`s out on April 25th and the new rule don`t come in till the 20th of May for not having to MOT.... might have to put one more years MOT on or wait till the 20th before riding it :(

Cheers

I've been waiting for 3 weeks for my revised V5C to return, it arrived today & hooray I thought; I opened the envelope & enclosed was a letter from DVLC stating:

"I've received the enclosed V5C but unfortunately there is no indication as to why it was sent..."

The post office counter clerk had failed to enter the tax class change on the form!

Follow on from posting on May 21st...

I've been meaning to get back to the Post Office to deal with the V5 issue, unfortunately delayed by moving house. On June 8th I received an email from the DVLC stating that my bank had declined to pay my standing order for Road Tax, so the dd had been cancelled & I had to pay for 6 or 12 months road taxat the Post Office.

Checking my bank account showed that a payment had been made on June 1st! So, on 10th June I called the DVLA who went off to check & then said: 'the dd has been cancelled because your vehicle is now classed as a Historic Vehicle & you will be receiving a new V5' (which arrived on 14 June).

It seems the counter clerk had updated 'the system' but not the form - what a confusing process! Lucky enough all has ended well :)
