Hi Guys,
Regarding the head steady (suspension spring device) on my Mk3 commando, the fitting dimentions given in the manual state the spring should be between 1.47-1.53, is this about 1 1/2" ? if so there is no way I can get it set to that, am I reading it wrong? if anyone knows what it is in mm it might help, cheers, Tony.

You're quite right Tony. There is no way that you can achieve both the specified spring length and stud free length on the same head steady - and certainly not if you use the rear abutment as per the manual drawing.
It is only a suspensory device. My advice is to set it roughly in the middle of the stud and see how it feels. If it vibrates more than you're comfortable with, you can always go up or down a bit and see if it makes an improvement. Incorrect adjustment of the spring is not something that will turn a good handling bike into a camel so don't worry too much about experimenting.
