GB8 gearbox

Forums
On the GB8 box as fitted to Model 77 there is a plate (aka cam plate) fitted behind the ratchet plate. The pawls engage on the ratchet plate when changing gear. What is the purpose of the cam plate? Should the pawls also be sitting on it or do they bear up against the side of it? Many thanks for any help. George

To all of you who are pondering how to answer this query - stand down! I dismantled it all and reassembled it on the bench. It is now apparent to me that the pawls sit astride the ratchet plate AND the cam plate. This enables the pawls to lift to raise them over the steps on the ratchet and move it to the next gear. But for this the gear change would be limited to one up and one down. Sorted! George

OK George glad you got that sorted. Just looked a one of my laydown gearboxes and there should not be any flop in the gear lever if the return spring legs are inside and engage with the pegs on the pawl carrier plate. Some repro springs may be short or badly shaped to do this.

Thanks Rab. I had a couple of millimetres between the open end of the cover plate and the spring legs so I super glued (very engineering!) a strip of wire along the upper edge that bears on the upper spring leg and - hey presto - free play gone! regrettably though still suffering from a non-engaging pawl on the upper gears where I have to tip the gear lever up with my toe to get it to engage so's I can change up.
