G15 Battery/Tool Box Cover

Forums

Does anyone know of a source for a used original or an accurate repro of this item?

I've tried all sources I know of in the U.S. without luck.

Thanks,

Ed

The AJS & MOC spares scheme do the screw on outer cover for these bikes, but there are two types of the inner covers for the battery boxes. There is also AMC Classic Spares that should be able to supply that outer cover and also Russell Motors in Clapham Junction. The models from 1963 to 1965 have a bracket on top of the inner cover, as it has the larger wider dual seat. The later or 1966 to 1968 models had that top bracket deleted and a through bolt and spacer was used as the dual seat was slimmer so the oil tank and the battery box assembly was pulled in more. The earlier oil tank had a straight mounting top bracket and from 1966 onwards the oil tank mounting bracket was bent to pull in more.

Thank you Anthony and Mike. I had tried Baxter without luck before posting here. However, I received an email from them yesterday telling me they had found one. It's on its way.

Thanks again,

Hi Anthony,

Would you know the placement of the 011373 nuts? It is difficult for me to imagine where they would be positioned and be accessible for a wrench.

Thanks,

Ed

That is very easy. They fit on the inside of the tool box, battery cover, onto the screw 014511 and they lock together to stop the screw falling out of the cover or becoming unscrewed as you ride along. Therefore the screw remains captive when the battery cover is removed. The washer 000012 goes on the out side of the battery cover under the screw. Do not forget to put the washer 000012 under the oil tank heat shield cover as this helps to cool the oil tank as you ride along. It is all shown in the parts book.

The washer 000012 goes on the inside over the battery cover and not as above and the two nuts lock against it.I normal put a fibre washer under the screw on the out side of the cover.

Thank you Anthony. You say

It is all shown in the parts book.

Can you direct me to a parts book that has illustrations? Mine has none for the N/G15's.

There has never been a parts book with illustration in for the G15, N15 AJS 33 or the P11 series of bikes. The only parts book that did have any illustrations was the 1964 Norton twin parts book but this is for the engine, gearbox, clutch, and the front forks. These forks shown were for the Featherbed version of the twins in this parts book. The 1964 parts book is for the earlier 1963 dispatched Norton Atlas Scrambler or G15CS. There is the Norton Workshop Manual that has some G15CS, N15CS related photos in it but thatis about it. I have been looking for such an item since 1970 and I have never found one. I have even asked the dealers that I contacted for parts in Norton America and they explained that Berliner never issued such a parts book either. Berliner did issue service releases. for these bikes back in the 1960's.At the time AMC and then Norton Matchless were trying to stay in business as a bike maker and this sort of parts book was put in with all the other models. If you look at Royal Enfield, BSA and Triumph, AMC and the later Norton Matchless Division parts books were woefully inadequate. Norton did not make a good parts book till about 1971.
