Frame number mismatch

Forums

Should it be the case.. what are the implications of the frame number not matching the engine number, this might be for a Navi. Of course the frame is made of a number of parts, with only one element having the number stamped on as I understand. Hypothetically speaking of course.

Hi Dan,

yes registered before I bought it. Came with a Norton Owners Club factory record referencing the correct number - I had mistakenly thought that this was a verification... Looks interesting..

Thanks

You are lucky Andrew--mine has non matching numbers--the frame is a 1961 Jubilee while the engine is a 1962 Navigator--I cannot register it until I have finished it by all accounts.

Hi John, when I finished rebuilding mine, I had it in mind to MOT it just as a final check, but might reconsider as not a requirement for this age of vehicle. Interestingly enough, I have MOT docs gong back some time, two previous owners worth. The last one I am sure had no knowledge of any discrepancy. The one prior to that might be more interesting to talk to. Of course I am sure that there is no deception intended, but who knows what the history holds. Silly thing about these is the frame of course is at least 4 parts, the most significant I think is not the one stamped...

It?s even funnier in my case:

My Navigator is a "Time machine", it came to Germany via Belgium and there it was registered under a frame number for a Jubilee, starting with 17XXXX stamped on the left frame loop. Someone must have changed the loop in its lifetime.

I found another number on the right frame loop near the pillion footrest. It is not clearly visible but I guess this is the right one for a Navigator starting with 9xxxx

Registering date is the Feb, first, 1960! I guess the Navigator was introduced in autumn 1960 and was available in early 1961.

But I don?t change that, I got old German papers with the same number.

Well almost, they added one more digit by wrongly copying it from the Belgium papers.

To bring it back on the road I need a standard TÃV (MOT) test and when the tester writes down the right number in his report all will be hopefully ok. I will get new paperwork anyway.

To my advantage, I do not need blinkers- they are mandatory from 1961 on!

I contacted the Belgium owner, he wrote:

all the best and much fun with the little one!

ps: make it rev ;I gave quite a few commandos on twisty roads a run for their money on it
