fitting Amal carb bell mouths

Hi

I have twin carbs on my Dominator 88 twin. I though it would look better with a couple of bell mouths on the air intake, so bought some.

Problem is, there is a steel ? screw on ring over the air intake threads which I can't screw off. Tried heating up with a hot air gun but won't budge, anybody else come across this problem and if so, how did you manage to resolve it?

Cheers

Try popping the carbs in the freezer - inside sealed plastic bags of course - the lower coefficient of expansion of steel might just be sufficient to allow the rings to turn.

I'll give it a try Gordon, thanks for that, better do it when the wife's out though..;)

The other thing to try is putting Jubilee clips around the steel rings. They might just give the bit of extra grip to turn them.

As a last resort hacksaw most of the way thro the rings and split rest with a screwdriver.

Looks like it will come to that, tried freezing them without success, put heat gun on, still won't budge. Will try putting them in an ultrasonic cleaner though before submitting them to a hacksaw. Will try the jubilee clip method as well, never thought of that.

Thanks for all the input.

If you try Jubilee clips, I suggest you try the way I remove threaded speedo bezels - two clips with the thread blocks close but staggered so a screwdrive can be used between them as a lever (if there's enough space)

But it seems a bit risky with fragile Mazak.

Soak with plus gas, try gripping with Stilson's ( large pipe wrench)

Can you post a picture so we know what it is like.

enclosed a pic, bit worried about using heavy stillies as may damage the alli threads on the carb?

They are a bit beefy, aren't they? I wonder what they were for?

Ithink I likeRobert's planbest - maybe use a slitting disc in Dremel? Not likely to squash anything. If you do it underneath, any slight over-cut won't do any harm.

After all - you don't need to keep the rings - it's not as if those rings are ofhistorical or aesthetic interest, is it?

Yes they are rather sturdy and I've no idea why they were fitted, they were like that when I acquired them. Think your right, careful cutting on the underside and then try splitting them.

Robert's plan worked, made two cuts very carefully with a junior hacksaw, about an eighth apart and chipped away with a screw driver, gave a couple of taps against the inside edge of the slit and they started to turn, popped them in the ultrasonic and they screwed off easily by hand. Look a lot smarter now with the bell mouths on. Put a pic on of finished job..:)

Cheers for all the help and suggestions guys.
