Engine speed limiter

Hello once again

Like Lee in hisprevious post, I would like to share here one nice experience with my 961 CafÃ? Racer and am just posting my last blog before my NOC-membership will expire.

For the last four days, I was travelling in Germany with my Norton and did meet David Charlesworth in the Oberharz. He was guiding me through a beautiful landscape and we had plenty of fun riding with two 961âs togetherâ?

During these four days I was covering around 1100 miles and the clock did pass a cumulated 8888 miles (see picture). The bike is going very well at high speed and the steering stays very smooth, no vibrations at all (except from the ones of the engine of course).

On the German autobahn many tracks are without speed limit, so I tested out the Vmax and did reach 130 mph on the clock, GPS said that it was 200 km/h (124 mph).

This brings me to the subject. The engine speed limiter was activated at around 7500 RPM, whereas the red mark starts at 8000 RPM. Once the limiter came even up at 7000 RPM already, which in my opinion is a bit too early. I do not know, but maybe this has to do with the fact that I was on a road with a slightly downhill gradient?

Does anybody else have experiences about when the speed limiter activates respectively an explanation for the fact that it may sometimes activate 1000 RPM beneath the max rev?

Hi Raphael

despite the weather not being the best it was a good ride out.

We drew plenty of attention at the stops, probably 99% of the people had never seen a 961 before never mind two together!

I haven't ventured too far above 6-6.5k revs yet - I guess this gives me an excuse to try this out and see how mine behaves.

I'll let you know. cool

As for the attention David - I too get asked about the bike every time I'm out on it. I rather enjoy the attention it must be said! wink

I get the same attention when I stop even in petrol stations. I've had mine for a few years now but I get just as much interest as when I first got it. It's surprising how many people still don't realise Norton is manufacturing bikes again even at bike meetings. I have had lots of people complementing on the restoration job I've done or what good nick it's in! Assuming it's an original Commano.

I've had mine indicating 130 mph and using max revs through the gears at Silverstone on a track day and it never limited. Although mine is one of the first Sport models. That was a couple of years ago and I don't take it much above 6K now I don't feel there is any need. I find that it's smoothest at around 90mph on motorways or once it's above 4.5K revs, it's not that nice below 3K but it's much better the more miles I clock up.

I'm guessing that you won't be renewing your membership then Raphael. A pity as we need all the members we can get. Best wishes.

Hi DavidIt was about one year ago I decided to join the NOC because of a post by one of the NOC's Technical Contacts which was getting me quite angry. That is why I started to post here about the problems I encountered with my bike and my local dealer with the Norton Factory...The same Technical Contact had recently started to do small talk here in the forum rather than to respond to some major issues. This was in my mind a provocation of a kind that made me deciding to quit the forum and to spend my time with riding rather than writing...In the meantime the technical problems were solved by my local dealer and I have written all what I wanted to share with others who are interested in the Commando 961.RegardsRaphael

Hello RaphaelSurely your issues were with Norton not the Norton Owners Club who have met up with you for a ride out and other correspondence, Why snub the very people who have kept in contact with you to here your issues good or bad. I would definitely reconsider your decision you are about to loose contact with some good friends.Happy MilesPaul.

Hi Raphael,

I've just got back from a week at the Edersee - wonderful "Norton" roadsð

Part of the journey was on the Autobahn so here is my experience.

Sat in the normal riding position my Cafe Racer did not want to exceed 7000rpm in top - but not due to the rev limiter kicking in. Tucked in and flat on the tank she reved through to 7900rpm and still the rev limiter did not kick in. So I guess the limiter, on mine at least, comes in at 8000. if there had been a little less traffic I would have known for sure.

Dave
