Electra Cylinder barrel base gasket

Forums

Good morning all,

In the quest to cure the top end oil leaks on my Electra I need a new cylinder barrel base gasket which sadly isn't listed in the NOC shop.   Does the navigator gasket fit or is it a matter of making your own?

Cheers

Nick,

The Navigator cylinder base gasket has holes to suit smaller Navigator cylinder spigots.

I placed the Nav gasket onto my Electra bottom end with a few cylinder fixing studs for location. Took the 1mm off the gasket bore holes with a pointy scalpel using the crankcase mouth below as a guide.

Anyone who says the Navigator gasket fits, forced the larger spigots through and ignored the gasket material scissored off or creased.

Maybe someone knows where to get the Electra base gasket.?

Happy fettling

Hi Nick,

While you have the barrels off, just check there are no bits of casting flash between the bores. There is an un-machined pocket there where twice I have found flash material, little pips, that poke up and are proud of the machined face.

Left, these pips prevent the barrels pulling down.

Hi Peter,

Top tips as always!    Luckily I jhave a couple of Navigator base gaskets in my stock of spares so I will follow your advice - and check for that casting flash / pips.   I am pretty sure the oil leak is from round the exhaust pushrod tunnels at the front of the head gaskets but with all the faff of taking the strengthening plates off to take the heads off I have decided to replace the valve guides, valves and springs, check the bores and rings (although they seem OK) and replace the cam followers and guides which are decidedly noisy.   Hopefully following your rigourous head re-torquing routine in the first 500 miles and using double rocker box gaskets will result in an oil tight and slightly quieter top end!

Cheers

Hi Nick,

The Spares Scheme has the base gaskets 24710 on order. Hopefully they should be here at the end of the week.
