Early Dominator Barrels

Forums

During a recent top end overhaul, I discovered my ´54 88 had been fitted with 68mm. (600cc. pistons).    Initially, I thought it had just been over-bored, because the correct pistons had been unobtainable.   However, since the spigots still have plenty of "meat" I am now wondering if 600 barrels could have been fitted.  What is the difference, are there casing numbers anywhere?

The bike is now back in the road, and running better than ever, I have just got to keep it on light load, for a few hundred miles, to bed in the new rings.

88 barrels have 8 fins, 99 have 9. It is possible to fit 99 barrels to an 88, you just get lower compression. It's not uncommon to overbore 88 barrels to 68mm. I've done it myself.

Thanks for the info Gordon, I was not expecting such a quick reply.   Just dashed out to the garage, mine have 8 fins, so, are probably original.
