Dommi wheel sizes?

Hi all

I'm just getting to that point in my restoration where by I have spent most of the weekend soaking years of oil and grime from the rims and have fortunately discovered pretty goodwheels underneath it all.

Wheels however are new ground to me and some advice would be appreciated.

Its a 1962 600cc 99, the front is running an 18" WM0 Borrani rim and the rear a 18" WM3 Akront. Is this a passable set up or is it something the previous owner has cobbled together that is likely to cause problems?

It would be nice to keep the set up as they look smart and as I'm discovering with all things Norton, wheels ain't cheap!

Any thoughts most appreciated as always.

Originally they would have been British madesteel 19 inchers. However, I have a Model 50 and an ES2 on alloy 18 inch rims with stainless spokes, using the new Avon tyres and both bikes handle very well. Your rims are Italian and Spanish I would suggest. Unfortunately I only have the one Dunlop Alloy rim. (Hard to get)

After these restorations I went back to 19 inchers with British made stainless rims. They say at 18 inches you get a better tyre selection but I find nothing wrong with the 19 inch new Avon's too.

I think the original rims on my 1960 99 were WM1 front and WM2 rear. I have gone up a size and I'll find out soon if I can get the original rear mudguard in. Have fun..

WM0 is a bit skinny for the front. WM3 is a bit wide for the back. Interesting combination! They should be WM2 19" front, 3.00" tyre, WM2 19" rear, 3.50" tyre. See other threads for witterings about suitable tyres.

the original tyers for norton twins models 88/99 were 19 x 3.25 front tyre and the 19 x 3.50 , now the early Norton 650 Named the Manxman export Models were WM2 front 19 x 3.25 and Rear WM3 18 x 4.00 and the same went on the 750 Atlas , but after October 1961 the 650 twins reverted to Wm2 Front 19x.3.25 and Rear Wm2 19.x 3.50 hope this sheds some light on the subject

Actually Anna the 88 & 99 front tyre size was originally 3.00 x 19", as I stated earlier. I see you managed to bring in the dreaded M word even though it wasn't really relevant. 10/10 for effort there!

Gordon, I have what I believe is the original front wheel of a 1960 99. The tyre is indeed a 3.00 X 19 and rim size WM1. The bike was last used in 1975 and low mileage, so a good chance it was what it leftBirmingham with.

PS:Being replaced with stainless spokes and rim with Avon 90/90 X19 Tyre. With 7" centres it might be interesting if it will fit. I think it will?

90/90 should be fine. For years I used Roadrunner 90/90x19 fronts - one even lasted 30,000 miles, far outlasting the SM Mk IIs on the back. However, a Roadrider 3.25x19 fouled the mudguard bridge with the 7" forks. It is now relegated to one of my BSAs and the 99 now sports a 3.00x19 Speedmaster.

well you must have a different Norton's to what I had in the past as all of them including the 1951 ES2 Had 19 x 3.25

well I looked At my data And your Right, I have it wrong but just going with whats on my 1954 dominator, front tyre a 19 x3.25 WM2 the wheel rim were from central wheel Co Birmingham , I spoked them up and trued them and balaced them too , And thinking back the 1951 ES2 I had was a 21 inch front tyre as it had trails tyres on but in standard trim , I rode to work on it every day down the river bank top track for 3 miles the dutch river dead straight run to Rawcliffe and over the bridge too work , at the paper mill I was a engineer there looking after the boilers and some of the machines only stayed for about a year and then when back to sea on the Esso .Ambition she was a 175,000 ton ship ,, I bet there all Cut up for scrap by Now, yours anna j

Not many ships built here now Anna. Even our own government commissioned ships to be built in South Korea as Royal Navy Supply ships. Utter disgrace. I went to Marks and Spencer last week to buy some shoes, only to find they were all made in India and the suits were made in China. I complained to one of the staff to be told (She)that 'nothing is made in this country any more.' Well how about a record number of babies?

Anyway, back to the topic, I'm waiting for Fred to get back to me with the mudguard and stay. The 90/90 X19 is in a WM2 rim and having read the comments of others I think it's going to be a tight fit. (7"" centres too) , I might have a cunning plan by fitting the mudguard (Trial fit before colour) after the wheel. I may be able, if possible to either slightly raise the mudguard via the stay or slightly modify the mudguard? Of course originality will be compromised.

Plan B is that I have a pair of forks assembled with 7 3/8"" centres that I was going to use on a Dommieracer. Again, not original spec but might be the solution.
