06.1974 FRAME SUPPORT TUBES BRACING PLATE
at https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-drawing/464/1971-on-commando-frame-repair-items
It is cracked between the bottom edge and the hole for the upper mounting bolt of the air-cleaner backplate.
Attached is a picture from below: as should be visible, it appears to have been "repaired" with some tack-welding.
The hole itself appears to have come in for some butchery, but since for some reason I don't seem to be able to add two pictures to this message, I will post separately the view from above which shows this. As far as I can tell the crack does not extend between this hole and the large one through which the wiring loom goes.
My most urgent question, of course, is "should I worry?"
Relatedly, what purpose does this plate serve apart from providing mounting points for air-cleaner backplate, oil tank front mount, and Dzus fastener for l/h side panel?

Quite a few owners in the States cut the plate away to fit bigger carbs and air filters. I wouldn't loose any sleep over it.

Thanks for this reassurance: I thought its main purpose was to provide some metal to put the mounting holes in!
