Cork washers

Forums

Any body know of a supplier of the cork washer used to seal the kickstart shaft of the laydown box. Ive had a go at making them but failed miserably.

Ive run a search and there was some discussion in 2011,

consensus being that the (hardened) kickstart shaft should be machined for an O ring.

Wouldnt that cause drag on the kickstart shaft.

Any help gratefully received

cheers

John

G'day John, I recently fitted an 'O' ring to my '51 box kick start shaft by deepening the (one only) groove with a very thin cut off wheel in my 4"angle grinder. I spun the shaft in the lathe to do this and cut only deep enough so a #022 'O' ring would comfortably fit in with not too much protruding. Upon assembly,(with molo grease),the return was a little sluggish, but now that the 'O' ring has settled, the return is now back tonormal. A mate here has fitted two rings in his shaft, but I felt that one would be sufficient and so far, I have no leaks.

Regards,

Paul.

Ive tried all over to get cork washers for the gearbox, and I didnt fancy machining the kickstart shaft.

So ...I made a tool to cut out my own. See Pics

When I bought the Nortons there were many spares including a small amount of 2mm cork sheet. I made a cutter for the `hole` out of gas pipe, machined accurately and slid into an `outer` cutter.

Anyway it works.

If anyone requires a cork washer (not on a commercial scale), one or two only, I will cut you one out. All I require is some 2mm cork sheet about 1 1/2" square (Ive none left) and a self addressed envelope. I will keep making them until the tool becomes too blunt. I dont fancy making another tool.
