Help folks, I bought achoke kit for the commando (750) ages ago and cos I have some time on me ands now I thought I would fit it. All went together easily, everything sliding nicely in the carbs but put tank back on and run it and I could only get it to run half decent with the choke fully open! Am I doing something wrong or is that how it should be, as without the choke fitted it runs fine?

Les, well worn carbs don't like extra choke. If your carbs are well worn then that might be the problem? When I got my Commando back in 1988 the choke assembles were not fitted but necessary when I installed a new Mk 1 single carb.
The old carbs at 24,000 miles were very worn.

Les, when you open the throttle fully, have the choke slides cleared the throat of the carb completely? They need to be out of sight (man) The brass sleeves that fit down the center of your choke slides can be fitted upside down and therefore may stop your choke slides lifting fully. Like Neil, I have never had chokes in when I was running amals, just tickle and go. The only advantage is that should you need a new throttle cable you can jury rig the choke cable to get you home.

I take it you mean the off position choke slides up and lever fully open?if it dosent run right in this position then something is wrong ,or do what i do throw them over the fence regards nick
Hi Nick thanks for that< I had a feeling that was going to be the answer! oh well another thing to put down to experience. Cheers Les

if the choke slides go all the way up with the choke off, ie tight wire, then I cant see how it can affect your engine running.
Has the bike been standing a while? It could be old petrol gumming the pilot jets/airways, or maybe some dirt got in them while you were working on the carbs. Either way I would clean them out before I did anything else.

Ah! a bulb has just lit up, the bike runs ok with the wire tight, I just thought that was choke on! Thank you, maybe I wont bin it just yet. Seems counter intuitive to me to have the cable tight in the off position, thats what I didn't get.Cheers!

Yes Les, it is counter intuitive.
Make sure the lever friction screw is tight or the slides can work their way down while you are riding..
For a cold start I tickle mine, give it full choke (loose wire) then kick it. It usully starts within 2 or 3 kicks. 30 seconds later it starts to get lumpy, I takethe choke off ( tight wire) and it runs ok. After a few minuets it even tick over.
Amal carburettors eh? Don't you just love them?

I too suffered a series of blackened plugs when I first had a Commando. I was advised that if I used the term air slide for that bit inside the carburettor, it might remind me that it works a. about f. to what you expect.
