help please i am having problems with clutch drag on my 1952 es2 that i purchased many years ago (15 + no rush)as a box of parts.

i started with the rebuild of the laydown box replacing all bushes, bearings,thrust washer and clutch worm only in the past 2 years have i been able to ride it up and down our yard 20mtrs. after a few goes the clutch drags bad enough as to stop me geting it out of gear whilst the engine is running. clutch has all new plates,chain wheel has bonded material instead of cork and the pressure plate is flat. with primary chain cover off, engine running and clutch lever pulled in i noticed the pressure plate wobbles (not chain wheel). i have removed clutch mushroom and found it to be slightly bent. has anyone had this cause clutch drag? any suggestions please as i am not getting any younger and would like to ride this bike in 2013. john.

A bent mushroom is not good. If a new one is unavailiable i would get my local engineering shop to straighten it.The springs will need adjustment to lift evenly. If you are used to modern clutches you may not be aware of this.The mushroom feature was good on the early bikes and was dropped for the cheaper button .

Whoops! Don't think the springs are adjustable, but you may be able to pack them if uneven strength. Get the mushroom sorted first. The plates may benefit from a little rubbing down to eensure flatness.

The beauty of the mushroom is that it eliminates the need to adjust the clutch springs. Straighten the mushroom, it shouldn't be that big a job.

Check the plain steel plates for warpage. Lay them on a nice flat surface and try to slip a feeler gauge underneath at various points around the plate. Don't bother with straightening them out, just replace the warped ones. Also check the projections on the plates that engage with either the clutch basket or hub. If they're burred, a bit of work with a fine file will take off any offending burrs.
