Brake drum - maximum

Forums

I have an 8" TLS brake on the front a 1960 ES2 I bought a year or so ago.

On pulling the brake apart the interior surface of the drum is very untidy - a distinct ridge at the edge of the shoe contact area and uneven on the braking surface.

Before i get this machined is there information available on the maximum internal diameter the drum can safely be machined out to? I have had a look on this site and in manuals without luck.

I'd post this in Heavy Twins + Commando section...

I've often wondered if grooves around the drum have an adeverse effect anyway? I don't see why they should - they might even add a tiny little bit of extra friction area...

New shoes will need to wear in but they have to do that anyway.

If you have the drum skimmed, you can get thicker brake linings which are then machined down to suit. Or you can be a cheakskate like me and put strip steel packing pieces on the shoes where the brake cam bears to take up any extra clearance. As for the odd groove in a drum, I don't think it makes any difference. What you don't want is ovality. As for how much to skim off a drum, best talk to the brake specialist. Finally, do you need a TLS on an ES2? A well set up SLS is more than good enough and has two advantages. No air scoop to fill the drum with rain water and also if you stop on a steep slope (a ramp up on to a van for instance), with the SLS you don't start drifting backwards despite a white-knuckle death drip on the brake lever...

The standard TLS brake has plates which blank off the air scoop, making the scoop purely decorative. Of course, I'm sure some people removed the plates.

Thanks for the feedback, yes this one has the vents blanked off, and the comments on the SLS all make perfect sense but the TLS was already on the bike so plan A is to try to get that sorted.

The uneven surface is not scored but has small undulations so that if you run your finger around the drum it rises and falls over smooth peaks and troughs. Doesn't make the brake shudder but that isn't working overly well just yet.

An old drum could be cut up to check the steel liner depth.MySLS is as good as my TLS after O/S shoes turned to fit.
