850 Shim in Relief Valve Nut

Forums

Is there a need for this shim (06-7646). I don't recall it being there when I stripped the motor down. I have got a new one to fit but am wondering if it is really needed. Your thoughts

This does raise the question of how one decides how many shims are needed.

They are to set the pressure the valve will open and fitted as required which could be 0 shims as does mine.

Covered by Mick Hemmings on the engine rebuild DVD, from memory, which could be wrong, you remove shims or add them until the plunger can be heard rattling inside when you shake the valve, but check first. Its more likely add as mine rattles with none.
