Gearbox thrust washer

Forums

Having watched Mick Hemmings excellent DVD a few times I notice that he fits the thrust washer (A2/328) direct into the the main gear wheel (with the roller bearings). The good book, on the other hand, shows a retaining washer (Plate TN12 but not given a part number. I'm assuming it's A2/319 - "main gear wheel sleeve bearing roller retaining washer")  between the thrust wash and the roller bearings.

Is the retaining washer needed or not?

Help!

BTW - I realise all this cropped up a few years ago but that thread didn't address the query as to why a washer is shown in the diagram but Mick Hemmings doesn't mention it? Very confusing!

.. on which type of box. As far as I know, the thrust washer is only fitted to the upright / doll's head / laydown boxes. In which case, the retaining waher is necessary.

Laydown, Ian. So if I understand you correctly it needs the retaining washer?

... there should already be one there although it often looks as though it's part of the main sleeve gear. It fits in a recess in the gear and almost completely covers the ends of the rollers.

Well done Ian. It's g/box rebuild day today so I'll do as you say and see what transpires. Many thanks for your help.
