es2 battery

Forums

Hello

Pete here from Perth Western Australia

Can anyone tell me why my ES2 discharges the battery in record time as soon as I connect it.

It has magneto and is +ve earth, I only need it for lights and horn

Cheers

Do you have the original mechanical regulator? If so it could be sticking on so that the field coils of the dynamo are permanently powered up.

If it discharges without lights on, either a bad battery or something drawing current. You didn't mention anything about what charging system you have, Dynamo or alterator? What does record time means? What size battery, 9Ah or less? Does you have an amperemeter and if so what does it say?

Hi

Thanks for your feedback. The bike has a new 11ah battery, its got a wassell +ve earth regulator, the mag/dyno has been serviced and gives a good spark, the battery discharges as soon as it is connected with nothing turned on. When I test it with a multimeter you can watch the volts dropping off, the ammeter shows a discharge. When I turn the switch I get the pilot light on ,the tail lamp on, the brake light works, the horn works, but when I turn the switch to headlamp I get nothing. I tested the globe its fine, and by this time the battery is down to about 4 volts. Something is drawing power but I dont know what. Any suggestions

Cheers

Either a faulty regulator or a wire where insulation is worn giving contact to the frame. If you just unplug or disconnect the regulator, and still have excessive current draw, you have a short circuit. Though it could also be the battery, check taking it out, fully charge it and connect  a headlamp bulb. It should have bright light for an hour.

When coming into the pits after a recent race (podium third), the Honda died. After hours examining all wiring found an insulation fault giving contact to a sharp edge of the frame. In my experience many electronic regulators draws a small amount of current when the bike is unused. I takes out the fuse to keep battery charged. Also had a mechanical regulator weld points together on a 16H.

The Wassell item is first suspect. Technical advice from the comp[any is non existent. So the choice is start again with a regulator if that is the cause.. Perhaps with a regulator that has technical backup if needed.

Greetings ,

If your regulator has Chernobyled, talk to Steve @ Trispark,  Adelaide, Have used his stuff for years and he is excellent for technical advice.

Good luck.
