Big 4 Petrol Tank Sealant - Petseal

Forums

I’ve tried to seal the petrol tank on my Norton with Petseal as it was rusty. It’s a two part epoxy type sealer, ethanol resistant.  Followed the instructions and kept it indoors and very warm for 2 weeks.  All looked really good with a hard and glassy type finish.  I reinstalled the tank and have had petrol back in for a week.  I was doing some work on the bike tonight and noticed some gunk on the petrol filler seal.  Putting my finger in the tank I can feel the sealer is very tacky and I can wipe it off with my finger.  Has anyone got any experience with this type of thing?  Is it a case of stripping down the tank and removing the stuff or can it be saved somehow?  Needless to say I’ll be calling them in the morning.

I would not trust any sealer.   The range of chemicals that can be in fuel  is not  a constant. I read somewhere that the manufacturers  have an almost free hand.

Last year I had a leak in my 650's tank. After reading up on the various offerings I chose the 'Caswell' tank sealant to fix it. I have ridden the bike a lot and have just been out and checked it. When new the liner was like glass inside the tank and it still is, solid and shiny. I have mostly used Shell 98 octane, and sometimes BP too. Whether it will still be like this next year I obviously cannot say, but so far so good.

In about 6 months we will be getting EO10 ,  or maybe  EO20  , the way its mixed  who knows?  Hopefully there will still be some EO5  ,but it will be expensive.  Perhaps we should get our tanks gold plated , that seems to survive well !

As an update, I removed the petrol tank and drained the fuel and the Petseal has hardened up again!  I can only assume the ethanol in the petrol has been attacking the sealant.....not good!

Ethanol resistant is not the same as Ethanol proof. Buy a waterproof watch good for 8m depth and if it fogs up you can complain and use the courts, buy a water resistant watch and you have no cover if it fogs up.
