Model 7 head steady

Forums

I'm looking for a Model 7 heady steady for a swinging arm frame, but don't know what it looks like!  Please can someone take a photo so that I can try and find one or otherwise make one.  A sketch with dimensions would help.

Hi Philip, I've had a 1954 swinging arm framed Model 7 for the last 15 years, it's never had a head steady so I assume one was never fitted. The bike rides well and doesn't vibrate plus no fixings vibrate loose so I haven't seen a reason to fit one. I'll be interested to see if anybody can confirm if one was originally fitted or not.

The Nomads have a similar frame to those of the swinging arm Model 7's. If there is a bracket on the top frame tube, that will take to bolts or studs, then that was where the head steady was bolted to. The head steady for the Nomads, was a triangular part, that bolted to the cylinder head.

Hello Philip

my 1955 parts list shows a steady stay part number D12/932, so it was there from 1949. There is no illustration of it though. I made a stay for my 1954, and will take a photo for you, It may take a day or two as we are snowbound at present, and its more than a two minute job to get the bike out from the back of the shed. Its 25 years since I made it, but I remember it was fairly straightforward.

Thanks everyone for the replies.  My frame has a stud below the rear tank mounting and an extended stud on the top of the head, just begging for a piece of metal to join them!  I've never seen an illustration of this steady, hence the query.  Another member has replied via email and will take photos of his steady, so no need to go out in the snow Andrew.

This is just another little job that Lock downs have made possible.

Regards, Philip

Norvil suggest using part 067856 as a replacement for D12/932.  This is a standard Dominator Head Steady strut.. Several postings above suggest that the D12/932 item, although listed, was not a common feature on Model 7s. I agree. The earliest drawing of the Model 7 engine show the top stud for mounting the head steady but not the plate itself or where it is fixed to on the frame.

In the Model 7 Parts Book the Oil Feed for the Rockers is a T-piece that sits vertically between the unions. I guess this must also have the Head Steady passing under the T.  Dave's engine looks to have a modified feed layout.
