Steering damper parts

Forums

Hi. I’m trying to build up a steering damper like the one in the photo below but I’m struggling to understand a couple of things. I was wondering if anyone has an original one?

Problem 1: I can’t work out if the barrel-shaped spacer goes above or below the big nut with a hole in that attaches the upper yoke to the fork stem.

Problem 2: Does the spring go above the big nut with the hole in or ‘inside’ it so that it’s held in place with one of the small nuts? Problem 3: The hole in the star-shaped spring is larger than the small boss on the underside of the bent plate so it can move around. I don’t have the part that’s shown in the photo directly below the spring. It looks like it’s some kind of spacer - does anyone know what it is and what it’s supposed to do? Is that the part that’s supposed to keep the star spring centralised,

Thanks

Regards

Tony

The chrome spacer at the top goes on top of the fork crown nut so the damper knob is clear of the bars, the coil spring goes inside the crown nut. The hex nut on the rod stops the upper spring from falling down and helps tension the knob. Is the washer under the star spring stepped to locate it? There should also be a nut 5/16 bscy below the yoke torque bar to lock it up,the torque bar will be threaded

Following on from Tony's question 3 above.

I have a problem getting my head around the star washer. Firstly the OD to the tips are of a greater diameter than the diameter of the "bent plate " round section on which it is supposed to bear. Secondly the central hole in the star washer is 3/4 inch ID. Is there supposed to be a top hat or stepped washer to centralise it as none of the regular parts suppliers seem to sell one? Thirdly the washer seems to have no "spring"  so what is the point of it? What would it achieve that a 1/4 inch spacer would not.(and for a lot less than 6 quid)? Everyone seems to sell the same star washer.

All advice gratefully received.

There is a simple reason the star spring makes no sense, it is the wrong one, I think they are made to suit BSAs, I gave up with it and I found what I assume is an original one (or possibly Velocette) amongst my odds and sods which fitted perfectly over the steering stop plate boss, and is smaller at the 'fingers' so that it applies pressure on to the stop plate, friction disc and bottom yoke, and it has plenty of 'spring' to it when nipped up.

if you fitted a plain washer you would have to be constantly fiddling with your damper knob as it slackened off, until you overdid it and it would suddenly go solid and pitch you off

Thanks Niall.

That was my growing suspicion, but all three of the best known Norton spares outfits sell the same wretched thing. Would be interesting to know if the right thing was available somewhere. I have searched hard but cannot find one. Rgds

Thanks again Niall.

Your thought that the star washer was Velocette seems to be right.

Velocette star washer part number FK248 OD 40.7, ID 8.4 will fit.

Rgds
