There is a Norton Atlas for sale in Finland, 1962, frame & engine number 101866 and then 20 for the Atlas model. I wonder whether this can be correct? Best Regards Ragnar

Hi, the records I've found show that the first Atlas was released in February 1964 and the Serial Number was 108000 so yours is not an Atlas, although the Code Number 20 is for an Atlas!

Your engine number dates from between 1962 and 1963.

I'm sure the Norton ID letters and numbers for their whole range must be on the NOC site somewhere but I can't find it!  I must be having a "Senior Day"!   

I checked two websites - Norvil and Classic English Bikes which both confirm this information.

(If there is NOT a database on this club site - then why not?)

PS. I've found it!  Well part of it anyway.  Not so well laid out as the two sources I mentioned because their's is tabulated better!

First Atlas went to USA for 1963. 101866 could be August or September 1962. At the start of the new model year. So it could be a USA import.

Berliner - the importer who pushed for the increase to 750cc - imported the Atlas to the US for the 1962 model year. The first bikes had small tanks, high "western" style bars and single carbs. I think officially all of the first year bikes were exported.

Now the first Atlas was built on the 20th of April 1962 to September 1963 was for export so the engine number will start with 101xxx So this motorcycle is a early Atlas So enjoy It happy riding. All the best Anna j

Hello now the club dose not have all the records on the Atlas as me and Phil Hannan have been telling the Club the Atlas engine number were much earlier then they anticipated and they may not have these on there records and numbers were earlier the what have been mentioned and some owners I have in the USA have Atlas with engine numbers 1012xx and workshop number 40 but bearing in mind that workshop numbers are not in numerical order and even Norvil or Andover Norton do not have full record of the Norton Atlas models just like they do not have full record's of the Norton Manxman 650 as well but I came across the first one built now in safe hands being rebuild from gound  up now all the best Anna J

FWIW I have an Atlas, engine number 102187. This is 321 numbers after the Atlas in Finland. Mine is an original single carb engine and originally had the pre 1964 narrow fork yokes without the fork lock and pre 1964 1/4 inch final drive chain. The bike is registered as a 1962. In the US, depending on the state, the year of registration can be the year of sale or the year of manufacture. Either way, the year of registration on my bike points to a 1962 (or at least pre 1964) manufacture date.  Assuming my information and Anna's is correct, there must have been at least 1,000 Atli manufactured in 1962. (Subtract 101000 from 102187). Perhap's Lionel's reference to 1964 is based on when the bikes were first officially released for sale in the UK?

hello fame dating   now look on the top edge of the top lug and you should see a frame date  but you may have to remove a bit of black paint first,  and you need a magnifier too as there stamped in very small number and a letter like my Norton manxman is M/12/60 and the magneto is also stamped 12/60 the bottom yoke is stamped 12/7/60  but not too sure what number the First was  but she was built on 20th of april 1962 and 300 would of been sent to berliner new jersey with in that month  of may   yours  anna j
