Norton generally used 1/4" BSP threaded taps. The originals were probably Enots..Are you looking for originals, replicas, or taps which work and fit ?

Hi Charles,

Does anyone re pack wheel bearings with modern grease every 1000 miles? I'd like to try a poll and find out how often the average owner goes near them.

Enjoy the bike! You need a maintenance manual. I see Andover Norton sell one for your bike.

.. with Enots type and taper seal versions for years (including having my newly painted primary chaincase stripped by a leak) till I decided to fit later type taps as fitted to Commandos etc. They work perfectly although I agree are not original.

Thank you for the tip.

i will probably get the Commando type.

cheers,

pete.

but '56 models used 1/8" BSP. Was the change made before then?

For your poll, I have never done that! Probsbly because I only ever used sealed bearings.

Next poll - how many people will say you should never use '2RS' bearings in your wheels for some reason!

I have had a Norton in my life for at least 55 years.  ,none have had sealed bearings. About 25 years ago I removed the bearings on my current 99,washed out, changed a couple that were noisy when oiled and spun. Re-fitted with felt seals.  Never had any problem since, Never failed an MOT , Must be time for another wash out!. Well worth keeping a close eye on gearbox and primary oil as they tend to escape ( but not on mine ,well sorted). Well worth taking off  the speedo gearbox ,washing out and re=greasing every 5k , as they are in a gritty place and expensive to replace, that's if you can find one.

Robert...interesting. Modern lubricants are si much better than they were decades ago that I wonder if servicing details could safely be radically updated. The only way to find out (I suspect) would be to ask who confesses to the most blatant acts of neglect and has suffered no ill effects. Engine oil change intervals come to mind. Especially if full flow filters have been added.
