Sturmey Archer Clutch Plates

Forums

I am looking for a set of clutch plates for a Sturmey Archer 3 speed gearbox for my model 19. Would anyone know where I would be able to source these? I've been searching and have had no luck.

Thanks again,

Rich

Depends what you need.

plain plates can be laser profiled and friction plates same with friction faces bonded in place.

ive successfully done this for my model 18 which originally had cork friction plates. Seems to work well.

I had to surface grind the various plates to thickness after bonding to get the overall appropriate stack thickness.

Hi Richard,

If you have the early '30s 6 spring clutch, the friction plates are the same as the Norton type that superseded them. As Stephen says the total width of plates can be a problem, I ended up putting 2 friction plates together which works perfectly well.

Hi Richard

Thanks again for the Clutch springs !!

Are you saying the later 3 spring clutch friction plates say as on my 36 ES2  will work?

My 31 plates are starting to make a ^ shape..they are not that bad but getting there.

Hi Ian,

Yes I fitted the later friction plates straight into my 1932 clutch, but it will be best to try a later plate first before you buy a new set, just in case there might be year by year changes for Sturmey Archer. Any pre 1956 (pre AMC) plates should fit. My old plates were in good condition, but the Ferodo friction pads were full of brass wire and slipped with-out much provocation.

Post 1931 clutch I’m pretty certain differs.

Attached is how I buy blanks, though it’s a while since as I bought 50 of each!

once you have the laser profile any of the brake and clutch reline people will bond friction faces for you though I had to surface grind them afterwards as they wanted £££££ to grind to thickness.

Duncan at Parkwood has just had made some plain plates for the central single spring SA clutch.

He can be contacted on 07594 931700. It’s usually best to text rather than call in the first instance.

Otherwise can anyone confirm to me the length/width of the single central spring as I am not sure I have the correct one on my clutch ?

Alan
