Plunger 7 oil circulation route?

Forums

I'm back for more on plunger Model 7 which came as a basket case

I have original oil tank which has suction and return with connections to crankcase is fine.

Oil return from oil pump goes into the oil tank with a tube that goes through the oil tank to a threaded connection at the top?

There is another threaded connection at top of the oil tank.

A little perplexed as to where the two connections at top of the oil tank connect to and from?

There seems to be a oil feed connection point on crankcase coming from camshaft pressure release.

I have an oil pressure guage that needs a connection.

I'm sure is all pretty simple when you know how but seems a big departure from setup on my two Commandos.

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter -

I'm afraid this may not be much help but -

on the singles the supply exits the bottom of the tank and then to the junction block on the back of the crankcase on the timing side and thence to the pump. The return (scavenge) exits through said junction block to a fitting adjacent to the supply on the bottom of the tank. Just before the tank some oil is bled off via a banjo to feed the rockers.

The oil returns to the tank via an internal tube from the fitting at the bottom and dumps out at the filler neck where it can be observed through the open cap. Yet another internal tube leads from the max oil level in the tank and exits the tank at the bottom to act as an overfill protection.

I can see one of the threaded connections on the tank top you speak of in both Roy Bacons Book and Internet photos - seems to have a ferrule and tube that loops up over the frame and then back down to where ??  A vent perhaps ?

Internet photos also seem to show two different size oil tanks for your bike - one similar to the singles and another larger variant.

If you don't already have one I suggest a Main-Smith reprint of the original workshop manual and parts list for your bike - very economical and helpful.

Cheers - Richard

Thanks Richard you've added some new & good information to solve my puzzle and I expect similarities with ES2 plumbing.

I have a copy of original Norton Maintenance and Instruction book for Model 7 but there is nothing about oil tank connections.

I will look for a Main-Smith reprint may be more useful.

Cheers

Peter

In re - reading your original post I note that the return may run through the tank to the fitting on top . If this is the case , this may then be the supply for the top end - rockers , valve train etc. We could use some input from others more familiar with this model/ year so thanks in advance for any help
