1961 Navigator De Luxe - Lucas ammeter?

Forums

Happy New year to everyone.

My 1961 Navigator De Luxe has a LUCAS ammeter fitted in the standard headlight shell. The electrics are standard 6V Wipac including a Wipac light unit and Wipac switches.

So I expected that a WIPAC ammeter would be the correct original fitment but on close inspection of the headlight shell the Lucas ammeter appears to be correct as the fixing lugs line up perfectly with the cutouts in the headlight shell. I do have a Wipac ammeter as well and this fits the 'hole' in the shell but which is the original fitting? The Wipac doesn't have the same fixing method as the Lucas though.

Is it possible that the Wipac one is correct in the Jubilee and Lucas is correct in the Navigator?

My parts manual lists the ammeter as part no S0062 - seems to imply aWico Pacey (Wipac) unit from the "S" prefix and as I recall they came in a green box (having had several replacements over the years). They are all much of a muchnessfor so long as they work - I am now running on a "look-a-like" unit which has a black face - the originals were white - which simply says 'Made in England' and the needle has stuck against the glass.

Have hadanother earlier look-a-like unit which requiredme to switch the wires to drive it the correct way round i.e show a '-' when lights on and discharging etc.

Hopesthis helps!

Hello Brian,

Thanks for information. That's the same part number as the 1959 Jubilee parts list then.

I do have both the white faced Wipac ammeter and a Lucas black faced one . I'm not really a concours person but it's nice to be an anorak when I've got the choice as both are in working order.

I notice you're into painting as well. A couple of years I took some original bit of bodywork to the local trade auto factors who mixed me some 2 pack paint to match the dove grey. Paint mixer man told me that officially he wasn't supposed to supply 2 pack paint anymore for use on cars or bikes but he said it was legal to still use on farm machinery etc. So he simply marked the invoice as Paint for Farm Use. I will have to call and see him soon as I have another frame and tank etc for painting.
