1937 Model 50 clutch - wet or dry?

Does my Norton 1937 M50 have a dry clutch, or is it wet? If it's wet, can I put 500cc Speedway Jawan clutch? I have one extra clutch of that kind, but not Norton's own

well its very likely to be a wet clutch, in the famous oil bath. Yours Anna J

It was designed as a dry clutch but then run wet...so they had to put a steel band round it to keep the oil out. No tidy solutions such as Val Page developed for Ariel and BSA.

For the chain's sake (and the clutch bearings) it should be run wet but modern friction materials will cope quite happily with the oil.

I have no idea if the Jawa clutch can be made to fit.

Andover Norton sell new pre-Commando clutches (but they cost more than I've ever paid for a Norton !)
