Rear mudguard for 650SS

Forums

I am currently restoring a 1968 650ss and unfortunately for some reason, the rear mudguard has been cut away at the bottom area next to the gearbox thereforeI am trying to source a replacement. Has anybody used any aftermarket mudguards and if so, do you recommend them ? There are a number advertised from India but I have heard bad reports on these. Any advice or help will be appreciated !

Left or right side? On the left the earlier bikes have the metal all the way down to the swing arm. The final bit is flat and tight close to the tyre. Later bikes seem to have this bit cut off apparently by hand with tin snips. Is that the issue? If that's what it then maybe it could be 'correct'.My tyre (1963 bike) has paper thin clearance on the left.

That is exactly the issue !It looks like they have been cut away with tin snips and is on both sides of the mudguard. It is a 1968 bike therefore obviously one of the last bikes. Maybe it was common to modify them to improve the clearance to the tyre

I bought one from the club because they assured me it was British made. It came with all the strengthening plates and clips for the wires. All the holes were in the correct place, the only hole to put in is at the rear of the seat.Trial fit and final fit after powder coating RAL 1013 were spot on.

Search: Neil's Norton Notes if you want to see it on my 1960 99 restoration.

Thanks for the info, I would like to keep the original if possible because it is in reasonable condition and would able to be rechromed (I am currently getting the front chromed and the stays). The ony issue I had was that the bottom end had been hacked away.

I don't think I've seen if the right side is clipped on later bikes but the left certainly is. And it looks like a quickly done and often rather crude cut -as if they never got round to change the factory tooling. It's not all that easy to see behind the chain guard. When my back wheel is straight in line with the front, I have about a credit car thickness (if that) to the tyre because mine is not cut away. I'm using the modern Avons.I suspect you'd be better leaving well alone but obviously I haven't seen yours and compared with others.

I think your right, the bike is definately original therefore somebody has done for a reason and this seems to be the only logical explanation.

Thanks for the help
