I've just recently bought a 1977 Norton Commando. Can I ask some pretty obvious questions.

I haven't got a box spanner that fits either the strainer in the engine oil tank, or one that fits the strainer in the crankcase. Measuring across the flats, I think that the size of the strainer in the oil tank is 1-1/8" AF and the strainer in the crankcase is 1-1/2" AF. Are these correct. I can't find a Whitworth size that matches and have assumed that they will not be metric.

I have now been out on it a couple of times. It seems to run well. It sometimes "pops" on the over run. Is this normal? I don't want to try and fix a problem that doesn't exist.

If not I think that I'll take it for a few more runs as I don't think that it has been out much over the last two years or so.

Agree with Julian on the magnetic sump plug with smaller drain plug. Also Andover Norton have a spanner to fit the sump plug (Part No. 13.1733).

From what I can find the sump plug is indeed 1-1/2 AF.

The oil strainer bolt looks to take a 5/8 Whitworth spanner but a 1-1/8 AF socket is a close (slightly loose) fit.

As you can see from the charts 5/8W measures 27.94mm across (spanner size) whereas 1-1/8AF measures 28.57mm - so a close(ish) match.

Concerning the "pops" on the over run - I'd start by checking for air leaks - loose carb or exhaust connections. As you say a few more runs and also check the spark plugs for running too lean a mixture.

Yes, 1.5" AF for the sump plug. Be careful when replacing this as it's a fine thread and easy to cross thread especially if you're lying underneath the bike. Don't ask me how I know........

Get a cheap Vernier caliper yoiu can get digital ones cheap now which are good enough for most jobs at home. measure nut and bolt heads as needed then you can use the metric equivilant. I use a 38mm socket for the sump strainer plug. In you look on line you can get them for a fraction of ther cost. I have found that the Metric equivilant is often at better fit than A/f spanners. I do have a full range of tools collected over years of working however and have found fit is down to the individual tool.
