Tank mounting rubbers for '36 Model 18

Hello all,

I'm a new member re-commissioning above machine. It's been in our family for thirty years but it's not been used for twelve and needs a little attention. The tank rubbers have completely turned to paste and need replacing... where can I get these? (or what is available that works if they're not?)

Russell Motors should have them. Part numbers 3732 and 3734. They're the same as the WD16H. If not, I'm sure others will and they're common enough at autojumbles.

The originals (certainly the 'stepped' half) are quite important to avoid metal-to-metal contact between bolt and lug. The original shouldered bolts are vital so worth checking that you have the correct part there.

Well, I called Russell's a few times today and get no answer so I looked at the NOC shop parts list on this site.

I can't find the numbers above. I also looked at the parts list on the vintagenorton website and confirmed that these numbers are right.

I then called Norvil who said that the old numbers were superseded, and that there is apparently a list of the equivalents which they sell.

So the question is: Are the following numbers off the NOC singles spares webpage what I need for the four tank mounting rubber sets that I need to replace on a 1936 Model 18?

The listings I found are:

1: Petrol tank mounting rubber - Flat (1 only) - Same as Pt. No. E6743Petrol tank mounting rubber - Flat (1 only) - Same as Pt. Norton completely revised their parts numbering system when post-war production commenced and to make matters worse, the 1946 parts list was unillustrated.

However, many parts were similar or identical to the pre-war items. As far as I'm aware, the 1946 models used a cradle frame virtually identical to the pre-war ES2 (which shared rubbers with the rest of the side / OHV range).

The 1946 part numbers are :-

A2/276 - Petrol Tank Platform Rubber Washer

A2/278 - Petrol Tank Attachment Bolt Rubber Washer

I'd think there is a good chance that these parts were unchanged. I was aware that 'Norvil' had produced a singles supersession parts list but it seems a bit mean to expect the customer to buy a copy before they can order earlier parts.

I hope this helps. I don't have any single-cylinder parts lists later than 1946.

Thanks for the explanation, it's quite clearly detailed on the racingnorton website which ones will fit so I think I'll go with that recommendation.

Also, I don't want to give the impression that Norvil would only sell to me if I bought the supercession list first. It just so happened that the person I spoke to just didn't know what parts were what and sadi that they sold a list that would tell me. He said that if I called back later between certain times I would be able to talk to someone who did know.

I just didn't have the opportunity to do that.
