Kick start Manx

Forums

I am currently getting my '53 long stroke Manx road legal ready and was wondering if a standard Dominator kick starter could be installed into the manx gear box to make starting a little easier. The gearbox looks very similar to the Dommie and I have seen a few Manxs with kick starts but not sure if this is with a standard manx gearbox. Does anyone know?

I'm new to this but on the Mike Hemmings DVD he uses the Manx lay down box as a demo box - there are a couple of differences, obviously the inner cover and also the gear where the end of the kickstart shaft pawl engages. I may have a spare GB8 inner case available in a few weeks.

My understanding is that there physically isn't enough room in the close ratio box for the kickstart shaft. I now a couple if people that have wanted to put kickstarts on and they have just fitted a replacement box. Don't know how far into converting the old one they looked though, I was talking to someone who wanted to do it a couple of months ago, I should see him tommorow so I'll ask him what he ended up doing.

Didn't the Daytona Beach bikes have kick starts? With non-standard low bottom gear to get the pawl in? Which could catch the rider out badly if he dropped into first when going too fast?

Has there been any more information on a kickstart conversion?  I have a friend that is considering converting his 1948  350 Manx  to a kicker

And standard gearbox front cover.  Lay down, dolls head or AMC all convertible.  Go to one of the parts suppliers they will advise full parts requirement.

As Jonathan says.  I bought a Daytona pair recently from RGM. Next task is to fit them. It's easy to do...no need to remove the box of course. Let them know the box to make sure you get the correct small gear.

Just this morning changed from AMC 1st gear to Daytona. Took me just over one hour. I'll report back on the results should anyone be interested. Picture shows AMC and Daytona side by side. Daytona is the one with the smaller big gear...
