Have quite a lot of end float on dolls head gearbox.
Can anyone one tell me please how much should it have.

... barely perceptible but I haven't seen a figure quoted. It'll probably be wear in the bronze thrust washer inside the gearbox. With the worm type clutch mechanism you need as little play as possible otherwise you get clutch drag as you will have discovered.

Check out the information on wdnorton.nl
under gearbox chapter.
The end float is recorded as 0.010-0.020"
As Ian says, check the thickness of the bronze thrust washer fitted between 3rd and top gear first.
A dished washer is shown in the illustrations fitted on the end of the main shaft if clearance is still excessive.

Part number is A2/328 and thickness is 0.208 inches.
Both Paul Norman at Racing Norton and Norvil have stock.
