Fierce kickback on first try to kickstart 850 Commando

Forums

After renovation of Commando and installing electronic ignition, the first try to kickstart resulted in painful kickback. The instructions with the Boyer unit were followed. Any suggestions or advice on preventing a repeat of the kickback will be appreciated.

This is a common problem with the early Boyer Electronic Ignition systems when the battery is not fully charged. It might be that the timing is over advanced but my money would be on a battery that needs charging or replacing.

Thanks Phillip, The battery is new but I'll charge it up before trying again.

The earlier Boyer/Brandsden ignitions ie MKIII could very well cause as above, but the MKIV units (last year or so) are supposed to be free from this and they also have a circuit whereby the first pulse from the Pick Up is ignored. Do also check that you have picked up the correct timing hole on the PU plate, there is two. (the other is for reverse rotation of rotor magnets).

The battery must be charged enough to hold the lights on to be any use.

PS The battery being new is no proof that it is decently charged. A couple hours left on can flatten a battery, it could have been supplied filled with water instead of sulphuric acid, I have even known brand new batteries being charged back to front!
