Hi, I have just joined the club after buying my first Norton at the ripe old age of 62.

The bike is a 1973 Roadster Engine number 306426, on the VIN Plate the Year is stamped 1973 and Frame number is 126286 although if you look very hard stamped on the headstock right next to the VIN plate you can just make out 850 F126286.

From what I can find out both numbers should be the same for it to be original, is this correct?

The bike was imported back from the U.S.A a few years ago and was bought and restored by the person l bought it off. Going from the Engine number on the Norvin website it shows up there as a Mk1 850 possibly a Highrider model.

I would send a request to the records people but at the moment you can't do this until after the AGM so if anbody can shed anymore light on the bike I would be very grateful .

Thanks Graham

That is correct, Graham, they should be the same. The frame number dates it as 1968, and, as you rightly say, the engine would appear to be an 850 from 1973.

I suspect whatever has been stamped on the headstock has been added when the bike was built up, in the 'States, perhaps?

Can you post a picture(s)?

Bonjour

Châssis fabriqué en Italie.

O.K Thank you all for your replies,

That is a interesting page on frame numbers Alan,

After taking some measurements and consulting the page it would appear to be I think  a Jan 1975 frame made in Italy with the narrow rear frame loop.

It looks like the VIN plate has been taken off and re-attached at the front of the headstock having said all that the bike has a 1973/74 reg plate.

That is the problem with Commando's with the VIN plate being detachable and the frame stamp not being used by the factory for identification until the MK3.
