Camshaft woes

Forums

The engine is now apart (at last) and it looks like it suffered some fairly catastrophic events in its previous life. The camshaft has some pitting on the faces of the lobes (please see photos attached). There are a few small patches that are no longer polished and are about 1 to 2 thou below the surface level. Is this camshaft too damaged to use? I don’t know if it will chew up the faces of the cam followers. I’ve never seen a camshaft damaged in this way so I’m unsure of the right way to go.

The timing side camshaft bush is also a bit worn - the camshaft can be moved up and down by 10 thou. The bush in the drive side has no slack whatsoever so I guess I need to have the bushes replaced and line-bored. Is that the correct assumption or am I being too critical?

I really appreciate the help given on this forum - thank you all.

As Robert says.....that camshaft has had it.

Worst scenario question here being ......where have all those case hardened chunks that had fallen off that camshaft gone?  They may have been circulating inside your engine and not doing any good whatsoever. You are probably going to need to replace every plain, ball and roller bearing, the camshaft and both of its bushes, plus the oil pump.

If the engine was not fitted with an oil filter then the pistons, rockers, spindles, half-time pinion bush, pinion spindle and camshaft followers will need careful checking. All the oil passages inside the crankcases and crankshaft will also need a thorough cleaning.

Oh boy - just what I suspected. Luckily (if you can call it ‘lucky’) I’m doing a complete engine strip - new bearings, bushes, oil seals etc. Plus I’m pulling the crankshaft apart. Funnily enough, the big ends (on +20 already) are absolutely fine - there’s no up/down movement and the journals aren’t scored. I think I know where one bit of the hardened camshaft surface went - one of the big end journals in the crank was blocked. I hooked out the blockage and most of it was steel. I hadn’t thought about pulling the oil pump apart  - if I do that and clean it thoroughly, will that be good enough or do I need another pump? I guess I won’t know the answer to that one until I see the state of the pump gear pinions.

To add insult to injury, when I pulled out the camshaft, the breather plate that fits in the end was full of water/oil mix. Triumphs use a similar part and it’s only £3 or £4 so I assumed the Norton part would be similarly priced. That being the case, I binned the plate and the equally mucky spring. When I checked the price of the plate I couldn’t believe it - it’s about £18 - that’s a rip-off - there’s no reason to have such a big difference in price even if the volumes produced are different. It looks like the limited suppliers of Norton spares are coining it in.

This is my first Norton rebuild so it’s a real baptism of fire. Oh well, what else would I be doing on a Bank Holiday Monday?

Thanks again for all the advice.

Many years ago I learned never to throw anything away till I'd fitted the replacement and was sure it worked. In fact I usually keep worn out parts "just in case".

But commiserations on what seems to be turning out to be not what you thought. Given the state of the engine I would probably be stripping the gearbox as well.

This was supposed to be a ‘quick fix up’ bike that I could run this summer but it’s going to be a long haul. I’ve managed to find a good set of STD barrels, so that’s a bonus, but they weren’t cheap. I’m removing every nut, bolt and washer to find out what else is wrong - I now believe that the speedo reading of over 91,000 miles is correct!

I think I better check the air in the tyres just in case that’s wrong as well - knowing my luck, the previous owner fitted metric air.   ;-)

STD barrels ? ,that was a lucky find.  Have them measured by a pro before you decide whether to bore, and by how much. Happily due to me being very tight fisted my barrels are only on 10 thou and not worn at all.
