Timing case

Does anyone know how many different covers there are? I have a late type with the three bolt mounting  fitted to my ES2, I wanted to swap it with an original type so I can fit a mag dynamo,. I bought one a while ago, but it fouls the oil pump and the cam alignment is probable 1/8th of inch out? What model is this likely to be from?

The one on the right is the one that was fitted, the one on the left is the one that doesn’t fit, you can see that the later one has been machined to avoid hitting the pump.

Does anyone have a cover for a 55 ES5 they’d like to sell or swap?

cheers  Dan

Probably a redundant comment now, Mike, but the rh one is the same as on my '55 ES2. For my info how does one make them fit?

Originally they were matched to the engine. Some of the cases as in the one on the left need to have the Aluminium carefully ground away to clear the oil pump, this is around the double holes at the bottom of the case . It is possible that having done that it will still not fit or lock up the cams. If it does try removing the top dowel, if that doesn’t work remove the bottom one as well, and if that doesn’t work remove them both. It is possible that you may still not get a good fit and will need to try with another.

When doing this don’t forget to check the ball and spring pressure release valve and the oilfeed jet and spring.

i can guarantee that the one on the left won’t fit a 55 ES2 without the careful removal of material around the alien screw mounting holes.i know because ive tried!  The rh one is for an alternator crank model?

Recently I have been doing some work on my '56 19S Timing Case. The machined pocket must be to clear the pump stud & nut and I assume was put there by the guys in Bracebridge Street. The dark blue mark shows where the new oil pump was contacting the case and preventing it closing properly. Solved by removing a small amount of material from the corner of the pump brass base plate.
