GB8 laydown gearbox kickstart return spring

Forums

Further to my previous queries regarding the correct return spring , has anybody familiar with the GB 8  box got a definite original or correct spring that they could photograph please.

I have received two new springs from different sources and whilst identical I am convinced they are not correct. I am tearing my hair out and I have not much left !

The one that I wish to replace is similar in dimension to the new ones but that too is not correct. I have managed to fit one of the new springs but it appears coil bound and bulges out so as to interfere  with the metal shroud cover. It also does not improve the lever return to it’s top position. It is not possible to further tension the spring.

Any help with this conundrum will be greatly appreciated.

Here is the spring from my spare box. I assume it is an original.

To pre-tension the spring the inner tang needs to be moved clockwise around the slotted bush. In the photo it has been moved just 1 slot from the free position. This was not too difficult using a flat bladed screwdriver to lever into position. In reality it probably needs to be moved around one more slot which is when things start to get interesting. The spring does shift out of position while applying the preload so the coils will need some shuffling before the cover can be fitted.

Hope this helps. Ian McD

Thank you Ian for the photos . I notice that the horizontal tang was fitted into slots whereas slots were not exposed on my box. Slots would have been a distinct advantage. Am I missing a trick here to expose the slots ?

I have just returned from the garage with blooded hands but unbowed. I have managed at last to fit the spring as supplied which is similar to yours. I had to fit the horizontal tang first into a hole in the gearbox flange and then for the umpteenth time used the serrations to take a grip on the vertical tang. Gradually by easing the tang over each serration with a screwdriver ( not good practice ) I managed to fit the tang into the into the hole in the shaft.

when you remove the spring cover, no tricks involved. Could someone have fitted the wrong kickstart bush to your box?

The radial tang (pointing towards the centre of the coils) should engage in the hole in the shaft. It is fitted first. The other tang (parallel to the spring axis) should engage in one of the slots.

A photo of your kickstart bush & shaft might help.

PS my photos are of a single cylinder laydown box (G102) although I think the kickstart bush and shaft may not be the same length as your twin cylinder box. As far as I know the kickstart spring arrangement should be similar. Could someone please correct this if wrong?

Sorry George, I don't recognise that arrangement but I can see why it would make spring fitment difficult. Over to someone who is more familiar with the GB8?

I think you have a mixture of GB8 and G101 or 2 parts. The kickstart bush and the kickstart shaft come in 2 different lengths. Or you could have a G101 inner cover.
